LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE IN SPRINGFIELD
Springfield is the capital of the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat and largest city of Sangamon County. The city’s population was 116,250 at the 2010 U.S. Census, which makes it the state’s sixth most-populous city. The city lies in a valley and plain near the Sangamon River. Lake Springfield, a large artificial lake owned by the City Water, Light & Power company (CWLP), supplies the city with recreation and drinking water. Springfield’s economy is dominated by government jobs, plus the related lobbyists and firms that deal with the state and county governments and justice system, and health care and medicine. As of 2010, 78.26% of Illinois residents aged 5 and older spoke English at home as a primary language, while 12.74% spoke Spanish, 1.64% Polish, 0.67% Chinese (which includes Cantonese and Mandarin), and 0.64% Tagalog. In total, 21.74% (2,587,254) of Illinois’s population aged 5 and older spoke a mother language other than English. Learning a language in Springfield can be a great way to connect to the diverse population that makes up this wonderful community.
