Salt Lake City is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Utah. With an estimated population of 200,567 in 2019, the city is the core of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which has an estimated population of 1,222,540. It is the larger of only two major urban areas located within the Great Basin (the other being Reno, Nevada). It is categorized as a “Gamma−” global city, according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Salt Lake City has developed a strong tourist industry based primarily on skiing and outdoor recreation. It is known for its politically liberal and diverse culture, which stands at contrast with the rest of the state’s conservative leanings. It is the industrial banking center of the United States. It is also the location of several institutions of higher education including the state’s flagship research school, the University of Utah. Utah has a sizable community of immigrants, many of whom emigrated from Mexico. Roughly 1 in 11 Utahans was born in another country, and a similar proportion of residents are native-born Americans with at least one immigrant parent. The majority of immigrants speak English well and are naturalized citizens or eligible for naturalization. The top five languages spoken in Utah are English, Spanish, Chinese, German and Navajo. In addition to English, more than 20 languages are commonly spoken in Utah homes, including: Portuguese, French, Vietnamese, Tongan, Samoan, Korean, Japanese, Tagalog, Russian, Italian, Serbo-Croation, Arabic, Nepali, Cambodian and Dutch.
