LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE IN AKRON
Akron is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Summit County. It is located on the western edge of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, about 30 miles south of Cleveland. As of the 2019 Census estimate, the city proper had a total population of 197,597, making it the 125th largest city in the United States. The Greater Akron area, covering Summit and Portage counties, had an estimated population of 703,505. Akron was the fastest growing city in America during the teens and 20s of 1900. The rubber industry attracted people from all over the world to work here. From 1910 to 1920, Akron’s population went from 69,000 to 210,000. By the mid 1920s, Akron’s population was in the 300,000s. Once known as the “Rubber Capital of the World,” Akron is now a world-renowned center for polymer research and development. Today there are 400 polymer-related companies located in the Akron area.In 2011, bizjournals.com ranked Akron the third nationally in manufacturing job growth. In 2017, the most common birthplace for the foreign-born residents of Ohio was India, the natal country of 56,561 Ohio residents, followed by Mexico with 44,953 and China with 32,750. The city says North Hill is the most racially and ethnically diverse community in Akron. Walking down the streets of North Hill, it’s possible to hear more than a dozen languages. Nepali men wear traditional Daura-Suruwals and Afghani women dress in burqas, maintaining their culture and identity through dress. From English to Vietnamese to Nepali and Arabic, North Hill is a multicultural neighborhood where people from all over the world now reside.
