While there are a variety of languages spoken in Afghanistan, Pashto, which is also known as Pushtu, is one of the two major languages. Pashto is spoken primarily in Afghanistan and western Pakistan.
Spoken by over 50 million people in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Pashto (also called Pashtun) is an Indo-European language distantly related to Farsi. It is most prominent in the sparsely populated tribal areas of both countries, although in recent years Pashto speakers have brought the language to the Arab Gulf and the West, as wars and lack of opportunity drive speakers out into the wider world. Pashto is written with a modified version of the Pashto script.
