Burlington is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is located 45 miles south of the Canada–United States border. The population was 42,417 as of the 2010 census, and It ranks as the least populous city to also be the most populous city in its state. In 2015, Burlington became the first city in the U.S. to run entirely on renewable energy. Burlington’s economy centers on education, health services, trade, transportation, and utilities, and some manufacturing. In 2011, the city had an unemployment rate of 4.8%, which was the 6th lowest of all metro areas. Vermont has a small but growing community of immigrants, many of whom hail from Canada. While 1 in 20 Vermonters was born in another country, immigrants are a vital share of the state’s labor force. The agriculture industry—an economic mainstay in Vermont—relies on immigrants for 10 percent of its employees, while 16 percent of all workers in computer and math occupations are foreign-born. As neighbors, business owners, taxpayers, and workers, immigrants are an integral part of Vermont’s diverse and thriving communities and make extensive contributions that benefit all. 85.51% of Burlington residents speak only English, while 14.49% speak other languages.
