Greenville is the county seat of and the most populous city in Pitt County, North Carolina, United States; the principal city of the Greenville metropolitan area; and the 11th-most populous city in North Carolina.Greenville is the health, entertainment, and educational hub of North Carolina’s Tidewater and Coastal Plain. The city’s official population as of the 2019 United States census estimate was 93,400 residents while the Greenville Metropolitan Area includes 200,000 people, making Greenville one of the densest municipalities in the state. The city’s industry historically was centered on the sale and processing of tobacco, but today the major industries are health care, education and manufacturing. The largest employer is Vidant (formerly Pitt Memorial Hospital) and the second largest is East Carolina University with specialized manufacturing and scientific industries augmenting the employment portfolio. In 2017, the most common birthplace for the foreign-born residents of South Carolina was Mexico, the natal country of 68,828 South Carolina residents, followed by India with 11,778 and Philippines with 9,880. 92.19% of Greenville residents speak only English, while 7.81% speak other languages. The non-English language spoken by the largest group is Spanish, which is spoken by 4.27% of the population.
