Allentown is a city located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is Pennsylvania’s third most populous city and the 233rd largest city in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 118,032. It is currently the fastest growing major city in Pennsylvania with an estimated 121,442 residents as of 2019. Allentown was one of only six communities in the country to have been named a “national success story” in April 2016 by the Urban Land Institute for its downtown redevelopment and transformation that has generated nearly $1 billion in new development projects as of April 2019.In the 2000s and 2010s, Allentown’s economy, like most of Pennsylvania’s, was based in the service industries with some manufacturing. There also has been significant growth in the health care, transportation and warehousing industries. The Allentown Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) operates a business incubator, the Bridgeworks, which helps attract and support young commercial and manufacturing businesses. In addition, the Neighborhood Improvement Zone (NIZ) was created by the Pennsylvania State Legislature in 2009 to encourage development and revitalization in Allentown. With the economy thriving, community is a strong binding factor for the success of Allentown. Diversity and culture thrives within the community. The Lehigh Valley has been one of the fastest growing regions of Pennsylvania over the last five years, but it wouldn’t be so without immigrants. Based on births, deaths, administrative records and survey data, Allentown added about 14,000 residents in the last five years, and that about 12,400 of those came from beyond the nation’s borders. Learning a language in a city where inclusion is a priority can be a great way to connect to Allentown!
