LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE IN PATERSON
Paterson was founded in 1792 by Alexander Hamilton and the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures. The city is the first planned industrial center in the United States, and the factories and mills were powered by the Great Falls of the Passaic River. The city became an industrial powerhouse. Firearms and locomotives were made in the city. Much of the industry has fled, but some manufacturing businesses, such as custom furniture builders, call the city home. During its boom years, the city became known for silk mills, which gave it its nickname: Silk City. The city has a significant parks and recreation system, including larger areas such as Eastside, Westside and Pennington Parks, as well as neighborhood parks such as Wrigley, Robert Clemente, and People’s. The Great Falls of the Passaic are part of the national park system. Since its early beginnings, Paterson has been a melting pot. Irish, Germans, Dutch, and Jews settled in the city in the 19th century. Italian and Eastern European immigrants soon followed. As early as 1890, Syrian and Lebanese immigrants also arrived in Paterson. It has since evolved into a major destination for Hispanic immigrants as well as for immigrants from Bangladesh, India, South Asia, and the Arab and Muslim world. Paterson has the second-largest Muslim population in the United States by percentage. The city’s rapidly growing Bangladeshi American, Turkish American, Arab American, Palestinian American, Albanian American, Bosnian American, Dominican American, and Peruvian American communities are among the largest and most prominent in the United States.
