One ironic nickname for Concord is “City in a Coma” considering that America’s first alarm clock was invented in New Hampshire’s capital in 1787. New Hampshire is known as the Granite State for large rock formations and quarries. Centrally located, Concord was named to reflect the “concord” (harmonious agreement) resolving the city’s bitter dispute over land boundaries back in 1765. Steeped in architectural history, Concord’s New Hampshire State House dates to 1819 and is America’s oldest capital city building in which the state’s legislative branches meet in their original chambers. From an international trade perspective, New Hampshire shipped $5.829 billion worth of goods around the globe during 2019. Its most valuable exports include civilian aircraft including engines and other parts, drugs and medicines excluding vaccines, printers and copiers. As of 2017, 8.15% of Concord, NH residents (3.48k people) were born outside of the United States. The most common birthplace for the foreign-born residents of New Hampshire was Canada, the natal country of 9,523 New Hampshire residents, followed by India with 7,906 and Dominican Republic with 3,486.
