LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE IN TOPEKA
Begun as a site to ferry wagon trains across the Kansas River to destinations out west, Topeka, Kansas, has remained a transportation hub for the southwestern United States. Located about 60 miles west of Kansas City on Interstate 70, Topeka played a leading role in the “Bleeding Kansas” territory before its statehood. Today Topeka, whose name springs from the Indian word for “potatoes,” or “a good place to grow or find potatoes,” is an important shipping point for cattle and wheat, and a wholesaling, marketing, and processing center for farm products. One of Topeka’s claims to fame dates back to 1951 when Linda Brown was responsible for eliminating the standard of “separate but equal.” She was the named plaintiff in Brown v. Board of Education and as a result of the lawsuit, required racial integration in American public schools. The Brown decision had a tremendous impact on the civil-rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Recently, Topeka has created a new task force made up of numerous Topeka-area businesses and organizations called Included. With an objective of creating a diverse and inclusive workforce in Kansas and throughout the Midwest, Included has made diversity and inclusion a priority. Learning a language in a city where inclusion is a priority can be a great way to connect to Topeka!
