Once the single language of a unified Yugoslavia, Serbo-Croatian has splintered with the country. It is an Indo-European language of the Slavic family. Serbo-Croatian is called a pluricentric language, meaning that there are numerous variations with no single dialect considered the universally accepted ‘proper’ form. Bosnians, Croatians, Serbians, and Montenegrins all use difference pronunciations, and variations in vocabulary and writing system exist as well. Serbian and Bosnian speakers alternate between the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, while Croatian speakers use only the Latin script – a difference that reflects the Latin Catholic tradition of Croatians and the Orthodox and Muslim traditions of Serbia and Bosnia. Montenegrins also use both systems, but tend to favor the Latin script.
The Croatian language is a language of the western group of South Slavic languages which is used primarily by the by Croats, principally in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbian province of Vojvodina and other neighboring countries. It is one of the standard versions of the Central-South Slavic diasystem.
Croatian is based on the Štokavian dialect (with some influence from Cakavian and Kajkavian) and written with the Latin alphabet.
